The Dress

RETURN  OF  THE  DRESS!

It would be difficult not to notice the current fashion trend  of the return of the dress.

For many young people this will be the first time round, but there may be others for whom it may be the second or even third time around.

There are short dresses, midi and maxi dresses, beach dresses and wrap dresses.

There are plain shirt dresses, bold design dresses, slimline dresses and voluminous dresses.

In other words there is a dress to suit every age, shape, size and occasion.

What is the reason for this?

We had become so used to our clothes being of a more practical nature consisting of jeans and tops and perhaps concentrating on accessories such as boots and bags that perhaps a change was long overdue.

The difference with wearing a dress is that the emphasis is often on the dress rather than the accessories.

For example, wearing an eye catching floral print maxi leaves little room for statement accessories as it is the dress which is the statement.

THE  DIFFERENCE  IN  WEARING  A  DRESS.

There is something about  wearing a dress which does something to lift the mind set.

It gives a sense of freedom and dare I say prettiness which has not been promoted for years.

With women striving to make their mark within society, the last thing that was wanted was an image of prettiness,  which may have equated to a less serious take in the career market place.

Does this now mean that the corporate suit is being replaced by a boho outfit? Does this mean that women are now confident enough in who they are and what they stand for that they can choose to wear something other than clothes that spell "power"?

The last time dresses were hugely fashionable was during the 1950s.

Glamour was the look to follow with stars of the popular film era leading the way.

Dresses were figure hugging and full skirted and not at all practical. They were short, although not mini and were accessorized by must have stiletto heeled shoes, handbag and ear rings. Make up was also fairly dramatic.

During the 60`s a fashion revolution took place turning just about everything on it`s head.

Dresses were popular but so were  many other things. A new wave of brave choices in colour, design and statements in everything from hair and music to social boundaries. The mini, both the clothing and motor varieties were  born. The 60`s was a complete revolution for young people.

Since then things have been fairly quiet on the fashion front with a spell of maxi fashion in the 80s.

This was my own favourite style. I loved long skirts of all sorts which could be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

Having never been a stock size 10, this look was very forgiving for me and I was sorry to see the demise of the long skirt.

However, it looks as if "long" is back, and particularly in the form of dresses.

ALL  SORTS  OF  LENGTHS.

I am really looking forward to getting into this style again.

Of course it won`t be exactly the same as last  time around, there will be subtle differences, but it will be great to wear something that is made from what I call "happy" material  with a degree of flexibility for those who have not been to the gym.

HOW  DULL ARE  WE?

It also is such a contrast to black and gray, which seemed to be a stock uniform for so long.

I actually love black myself as it has been so easy to wear, is forgiving size wise and is a practical choice for someone with a fairly limited wardrobe. However it does need a pop of colour or some fairly eye catching jewellery to lift it out of the doldrums.

Black and gray  are  not  "happy" colours and I`m sure do nothing for our mental health.

We have become a very gray nation with black and gray being the colours of not only work wear but that of casual wear too. How very depressing!

BRIGHTEN  UP.

One has only to look at countries abroad which although may not be rich, have a riot of colourful clothes and surroundings which gives an air of "exotica"!

Colour and print although something I shied away from, gives a definite lift to the spirits, and let`s face it we all need a lift of the spirits right now.

LET  YOUR  DRESS  SPEAK!

It looks as if the return of the dress then is no coincidence

It is telling us something. It is telling us we should be happy in what we are wearing and that the colours and styles should be joyous and free and represent our individuality and what we are comfortable with,  so long live the dress!
