Often in life it is the small unassuming things which don`t look important, but are necessary to keep a bigger picture functioning.
In nature, it is the insect world, often disregarded and trampled underfoot, which is so vital to keep the whole eco system running smoothly.
They may not be so exotic in colour and appearance as birds for example, but when looked at closely, insects are a complex feat of engineering and mutation, and perform tasks necessary to keep living things healthy.
Many have survived for thousands of years, adapting to environment and climate. They help to keep the infra structure clean, support the evolution of the natural world and keep it in balance.
Beetle
Often stepped on and regarded as unappealing, the diverse beetle family plays an important part in nature. It has been around for thousands of years and has adapted and mutated to various environments. This one has a striking blue black colour.
Grasshopper: Note the complexity of the grasshopper`s structure. Capable of jumping large distances and having effective camouflage.
Owl butterfly: Such effective camouflage and extra owl like "eye"!
Honey bee: One of the most hard working and misunderstood insects which provides such a good service to flowers and humans and all because it has an effective defense mechanism...it`s sting.
Dragonfly: Beautifully coloured elegant creature.
Turmite hills: Vast piles of earth thrown up by hard working turmites!
Larvae about to hatch: An incredible incubation system
Praying Mantis: Such detail in a tiny insect.
Spider having caught a beetle in its web. Not a favourite with humans...but very clever!
Spider web: A beautiful but deadly trap!
Cicadas: Colourful and unusual shape.
House Fly: Even this annoying insect has a purpose. It eats up waste and bacteria although if not treated with care can also transmit the same, causing disease.
One insect that is a favourite.....the Ladybug
Having looked at the last few blog images which have included a variety of examples of the natural world, it illustrates what a fantastic, diverse, mix we have.
Everything has a purpose and ideally should be in balance and we as humans must play our part.
To date that has not been happening, and we are already paying a price with a much greater one to come if we don`t take heed.
We have not only been poisoning our natural world, but destroying habitats and species which are so vital to our existence. Surely if we keep on doing that there won`t be a natural world left and we cannot manufacture one.
What a legacy in self destruction.
