It seems that looking around the world, it is going through a bit of a crisis.
Not only is the environment under attack, but countries are at war which results in world wide instability, with people dying, injured or being displaced.
Closer to home, we have increasing social and financial problems and concerns about physical and mental health.
Our political system has many shortcomings and it is unclear as to which direction the country should be taking.
However, we must remember that as a country we have ace cards, which many countries are denied and that is freedom and democracy.
We may take these things for granted as we don`t really have to question them, but they are so important to our way of life, and were fought for by our forebears, so we must protect them at all costs, particularly remembering them on Armistice Day.
It may look bleak just now with most of us having to watch the cash flow, but given our right to be free to do and say what we want within the law, it should only be a matter of time before the country recognizes that it is perfectly possible to move forward and improve things.
The answer surely lies with the people themselves. It shouldn`t be up to government to provide everything for us, it is there to provide a vision and a lead.
There is nothing like being down at rock bottom to formulate a way to climb out.
It`s back to the old fight or flight dilemma. When faced with an obstacle, do you work out a way to deal with it, or do you give up and turn away?
It is the same for a country. It must decide what it wants, what resources it has and how does it achieve its objectives.
At a guess, most people in our country would want to live in peace and safety, in a diverse society with a flourishing economy, good employment, housing prospects, education and healthcare systems, which factor in the care of the young and old.
In our country we already have the framework in place for these things, as they have proved to be achievable and successful in the past. It is unfortunate that due to many influences, including financial constraints and political and overall mismanagement, we have fallen short in the world wide league tables.
The situation can be rectified, but it will take the public to ask for high standards to be set which will undoubtedly involve investment in key areas such as education, health, law and order and employment.
These things can be achieved with strong leadership in overall political management and also at devolved levels which truly represent the electorate.
The country has lost pride in itself and is lacking motivation and aspiration. However, the building blocks are there, it needs the country to use them sensibly.
Since the end of the second world war, life improved for everyone and as a country we haven`t had to face a significant challenge until Covid came along. Perhaps life had become a bit too easy with many unable to contemplate a dip to a comfortable way of life, and are finding it difficult to dig deep when times got a little tougher.
However, once again doing a comparison with the natural world, which is constantly reinventing itself to stay relevant or die, the country must do just that. Reinvent itself.
It is a very different world now to that of 50 years ago.
Technology changed everything and AI is going to change things even more, so we must change with it or as in the natural world get left behind and become extinct.
